Externship Program

Piedmont Equine’s Externship Program provides an opportunity for veterinary students to gain meaningful knowledge and experience while working under the guidance of senior clinicians. All externs will have the opportunity to shadow our veterinarians throughout their day and receive instruction based upon their experience and interest. Each of our staff veterinarians and the intern veterinarians will work with the extern to ensure that their learning goals are met.

Our practice offers a comprehensive program that allows externs to assist with hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory services. Our doctors are willing to invest in students to advance the equine veterinary field experience. The goal of the externship program is to provide exposure to and experience with a variety of cases including preventive care, surgical procedures, anesthesia, internal medicine, intensive case management, dentistry, and reproduction (if the externship is completed during the Spring). The committed extern who puts forth effort and enthusiasm is given the opportunity to practice procedures with recipient mares owned by the clinic.

Internship Program

Piedmont Equine Associates is proud to offer a comprehensive program for 2 new veterinarians to gain meaningful experience while working under the guidance of eight senior clinicians including two surgeons. Interns will assist with hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory services with direct and indirect supervision as experience, confidence, and abilities grow throughout the internship year. Interns will be responsible for in-patient cases and daily treatment updates for senior veterinarians. They are exposed to a wide range of clinical cases and experiences and will be involved in every aspect of the practice as well as surgical procedures, intensive care case management, and emergency services.

The goal for the internship program at our practice is to produce a competent, well-rounded equine veterinarian in 12 months. Learning is always the primary responsibility; therefore, the intern’s daily exposure to a variety of cases is essential to the experience. Piedmont Equine is a progressive practice that values new methodology and procedures. Our veterinarians value their time that is spent mentoring others in the advancement of their careers.
